What We Do

Women are the backbone of families, communities, and economies yet in many parts of the world, they face systemic barriers to education, financial resources, and leadership opportunities. At DMI, we believe that empowering women is one of the most effective ways to bring lasting change to entire communities.

Our Women’s Empowerment programs use a holistic approach that moves women from dependency to leadership:

  • Economic Empowerment - We organize women into Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), where they learn to save, access small loans, and collectively invest in income-generating activities.
  • Federations for Collective Voice - SHGs and VSLAs are linked into federations, creating stronger networks that advocate for women’s rights, negotiate better market access, and influence local governance. These federations help women move beyond individual success to collective community transformation.
  • Microfinance Services - Through our microfinance initiatives, women can access affordable credit to start or expand small businesses such as tailoring, handicrafts, food production, livestock rearing, or small-scale farming. Microfinance enables women to invest in assets, increase household income, and break cycles of poverty.
  • Financial Literacy & Business Skills - We train women in budgeting, record-keeping, market analysis, and entrepreneurship so they can manage their finances effectively and grow sustainable enterprises.
  • Rights Awareness & Advocacy - Women are educated about their legal rights, health, and safety, empowering them to challenge gender-based violence, discrimination, and harmful cultural practices.
  • Leadership Development - Women receive training to lead SHGs, federations, and community initiatives, ensuring their voices shape decisions that affect their lives.

So far, more than 320,000 women have participated in these programs, with many becoming successful entrepreneurs, community leaders, and advocates for change. Through advocacy and protection initiatives, 1,785 women and girls have been safeguarded from gender-based violence and discrimination, creating ripples of empowerment that benefit entire communities.

Food security is not just about having enough to eat, it is about ensuring communities have the knowledge, skills, and resources to feed themselves sustainably and live with dignity. At DMI, we recognize that poverty, climate change, and limited access to land and resources often keep families trapped in food insecurity. Our Food Security and Livelihood programs address these challenges through training, resource provision, and community organization.

Our approach includes:
  • Sustainable Agriculture Training - Farmers are introduced to climate-resilient farming practices such as organic composting, integrated pest management, water-efficient irrigation, crop diversification, and soil conservation techniques that protect the environment while increasing yields.
  • Access to Seeds, Tools, and Inputs - We supply farmers with high-quality seeds, modern tools, and improved planting materials to help them increase productivity and reduce crop failure risks.
  • Kitchen & Nutrition Gardens - Families are trained to grow diverse vegetables and fruits at home, ensuring year-round access to nutritious food and reducing reliance on market purchases.
  • Farmer Field Schools & Demonstration Plots - These serve as practical learning spaces where farmers test new techniques, share experiences, and collectively problem- solve challenges related to pests, diseases, and market fluctuations.
  • Value Addition & Market Linkages - Farmers are trained in post-harvest processing, packaging, and marketing, enabling them to add value to their produce and secure better prices in local and regional markets.
  • Livelihood Diversification - Beyond farming, participants are encouraged to engage in complementary income-generating activities such as poultry keeping, beekeeping, fish farming, and small-scale food processing to create multiple sources of income.
  • Community Cooperatives & Producer Groups - Farmers are organized into cooperatives and producer groups to increase bargaining power, share resources, and access larger markets collectively.

So far, over 86,000 smallholder farmers have been empowered to improve productivity, boost incomes, and provide balanced nutrition for their families. By building both skills and resilience, these initiatives help communities reduce dependence on external aid, withstand economic and environmental shocks, and secure a better future.

Human trafficking robs individuals, especially women and children of their freedom, dignity, and future. At DMI, we believe prevention, protection, and rehabilitation must work hand- in-hand to address both the root causes and the devastating consequences of trafficking.

Our approach is comprehensive and survivor-centered, ensuring that vulnerable individuals are protected before trafficking occurs, and survivors are supported to rebuild their lives with dignity and independence.

Our work in this area focuses on three pillars:
  • Prevention & Awareness – We conduct targeted community outreach programs, awareness campaigns, and school-based sensitization to educate vulnerable groups, families, and community leaders about the tactics traffickers use, the risks involved, and how to protect children and youth. This includes training village leaders, transport workers, and local businesses to identify and report trafficking cases.
  • Early Identification & Rescue – We collaborate with local authorities, border agencies, and community networks to identify at-risk individuals and intercept trafficking attempts. When cases are detected, we work with law enforcement to rescue victims and ensure their immediate safety.
  • Holistic Survivor Rehabilitation – Our rehabilitation programs address the physical, emotional, and social needs of survivors.
Support includes
  • Psycho-social care & trauma counseling to help survivors heal emotionally and mentally.
  • Medical assistance to address injuries, malnutrition, or other health issues.
  • Legal aid to pursue justice and navigate legal processes.
  • Vocational training & education to equip survivors with skills for sustainable livelihoods.
  • Safe shelter & transitional housing for those unable to return home immediately.
  • Family tracing & reintegration support where safe and appropriate, ensuring survivors can return to a protective and supportive environment.

Our commitment does not end at rescue, survivors are supported until they can confidently sustain themselves, free from the risk of re-exploitation.

So far, more than 2,000 survivors have rebuilt their lives through our programs, gaining the tools, skills, and confidence to live independently. Many have gone on to become advocates themselves, using their voices and experiences to prevent others from falling victim to trafficking.

Every child has the right to grow up safe, healthy, educated, and loved, yet millions are denied these basic rights due to poverty, neglect, conflict, and exploitation. At DMI, we are committed to breaking this cycle by creating nurturing environments where children can reach their full potential. Our Child Development programs address children’s immediate needs while building long-term opportunities for growth, learning, and leadership.

Our approach includes:
  • Access to Quality Education - We provide school enrollment support, scholarships, learning materials, and tutoring to ensure that marginalized children can start and stay in school. We also partner with schools to improve teaching quality and create inclusive learning spaces.
  • Health & Nutrition - We run school health programs, regular medical check-ups, and nutrition initiatives to ensure children are physically well and ready to learn. This includes providing nutritious meals, deworming, and hygiene awareness.
  • Protection from Exploitation - We work with communities to prevent child labor, trafficking, and other forms of abuse. Community-based child protection committees are established to identify and respond to risks quickly.
  • Children’s Parliaments & Leadership Training - We believe children are not just future leaders, they can be leaders now. Through children’s parliaments, they learn about their rights, develop leadership skills, and advocate for changes in their schools and communities.
  • Psycho-social Support - For children affected by trauma, neglect, or conflict, we offer counseling, mentorship, and recreational activities that help restore confidence and emotional well-being.
  • Family Strengthening - We support families through parenting workshops, income- generating activities, and counseling, ensuring that children grow up in safe, stable, and supportive homes.

Through these interventions, we have reached over 115,000 children, helping them to not only survive but to thrive with stronger bodies, sharper minds, and brighter futures. Our goal is to nurture a generation that is educated, resilient, and empowered to break free from cycles of poverty and injustice.

Adolescence is a critical window in a girl’s life, a time of rapid physical, emotional, and social change that shapes her future. Yet, millions of girls face gender-based discrimination, early marriage, unsafe working conditions, school dropout, and limited opportunities for personal growth. At DMI, we believe that when a girl is educated, confident, and supported, she can transform not only her own life but her family, community, and nation.

Our Adolescent Girls’ Empowerment program equips girls aged 10–19 with the knowledge, skills, and support systems they need to thrive, avoid exploitation, and realize their potential.

Our approach includes:
  • Life Skills Education -Training in decision-making, communication, problem-solving, and leadership to prepare girls for adulthood with confidence and resilience.
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR) - Age-appropriate education on menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, consent, and healthy relationships, enabling girls to make informed choices and protect themselves.
  • Educational Continuity - Scholarships, school re-enrollment support, and tutoring to help girls stay in school, break cycles of dropout, and open doors to higher education or vocational training.
  • Mental Health & Well-being - Counseling, peer support groups, and stress management workshops to address the emotional challenges faced during adolescence.
  • Vocational Skills Training - Skills such as tailoring, computer literacy, hairdressing, and other trades to enhance employability and financial independence.
  • Prevention of Early & Forced Marriage - Community advocacy campaigns, parental engagement, and collaboration with local authorities to protect girls from harmful practices.
  • Girls’ Federations & Peer Networks - Platforms for girls to organize, share experiences, and collectively advocate for their rights within the community.

Through these interventions, adolescent girls learn to speak up, stay in school, access health care, and participate actively in decision-making. Many graduates of the program have gone on to become community leaders, social entrepreneurs, and role models for younger girls.

DMI’s AGE program does more than protect girls it unlocks their power to create lasting change, ensuring that the next generation of women are educated, healthy, and empowered.

Young people hold immense potential to drive social and economic transformation yet many face unemployment, lack of marketable skills, limited access to education, and vulnerability to exploitation. DMI’s Youth Development program focuses on equipping young women and men with the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to build sustainable livelihoods and become active contributors to their communities.

Our approach blends skills training, mentorship, and entrepreneurship support with a strong emphasis on character formation and community service. We work with youth from diverse backgrounds including school dropouts, unemployed graduates, rural youth, and those from marginalized or conflict-affected areas to unlock their potential and prepare them for a dignified future.

Key interventions include:
  • Vocational & Technical Skills Training – Hands-on training in trades such as carpentry, tailoring, welding, mechanics, computer technology, hospitality, and agriculture to meet market demands.
  • Entrepreneurship Development – Guidance on business planning, market research, and financial management, enabling youth to start and manage their own enterprises.
  • Access to Microfinance & Start-up Capital – Small loans, savings schemes, and linkages with microfinance institutions to support youth-led businesses.
  • Youth Federations & Peer Networks – Platforms where young people collaborate, share ideas, and advocate for policies that address their needs.
  • Soft Skills & Leadership Training – Building communication, teamwork, time management, and leadership skills to enhance employability and civic engagement.
  • Digital Literacy & Innovation Labs – Providing access to technology, training in digital tools, and fostering creativity to prepare youth for the modern economy.

By combining skill-building with values education and entrepreneurship support, the Youth Development program not only prepares young people for jobs. It empowers them to create jobs, become change agents, and lead their communities toward sustainable progress.
